Sara Flanagan is an Assistant Professor of Special Education at the University of Maine, affiliated with the School of Learning and Teaching within the College of Education and Human Development. She holds a Ph.D. from Purdue University (2012), an MS.Ed. in Educational Technology (2008), and a B.A. in Special Education (2006), all from Purdue. Her research focuses on literacy and written expression for secondary students with and without high-incidence disabilities, integrating technology in education to enhance learning and teaching.
Flanagan’s work emphasizes the use of assistive technology, such as graphic organizers and apps, to support students’ academic needs. She collaborates with K-12 educators to implement evidence-based interventions. She previously served as a special education faculty member at the University of Kentucky and currently chairs the Research and Technology Committee of the Council for Learning Disabilities.
Her publications span peer-reviewed journals like Learning Disabilities: A Multidisciplinary Journal and Disability and Rehabilitation: Assistive Technology, focusing on assistive technology integration, inclusive education practices, and STEM accessibility. Courses she teaches include special education assessment, universal design for learning, and interventions for reading/writing difficulties.
