Dr. Sara E. S. Martin is an Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at the College of Wooster. She holds a B.Sc. from Lebanon Valley College (2009) and a Ph.D. from the University of Delaware (2014). Her research focuses on combating antibiotic resistance through structural and biochemical studies of bacterial enzymes involved in cell wall biosynthesis.
Her lab employs organic synthesis, biochemistry, and protein crystallography to design glycosyltransferase inhibitors. This work addresses the global health crisis of antibiotic-resistant bacteria by developing novel therapeutic strategies targeting bacterial growth mechanisms.
Dr. Martin has received significant recognition including an NIH NRSA Postdoctoral Fellowship at Harvard Medical School (2014-2018) and the Elizabeth Dyer Teaching Award. She actively mentors undergraduate researchers through independent study projects focused on enzyme inhibition and antibiotic development.
- NIH NRSA Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Harvard Medical School (2014-2018)
- Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (2016)
- Elizabeth Dyer Award for Excellence in Teaching (2012)
She serves as Secretary of the ACS Wooster Local Section and participates in committees promoting women in STEM, including the Empowering Women in Organic Chemistry initiative.
