Sara Dominici is a Senior Lecturer in Photographic History and Visual Culture at the University of Westminster, where she serves as Course Leader for the MA in Art and Visual Culture and co-Leader for the MA Museums, Galleries, and Contemporary Culture. Her research focuses on popular photographic practices from the 19th to mid-20th century, intersecting with mobility studies, modernity, and the cultural significance of the darkroom. She holds a PhD (2014) and MA (2010) in Visual Culture from the University of Westminster, alongside a Laurea quinquennale in Scienze della Comunicazione (2004) from La Sapienza University and an FdA in Photojournalism (2006) from the London College of Communication. A co-Editor-in-Chief of Visual Culture in Britain, she has authored the book Reading the Travel Image (Routledge, 2018) and received the BA/Leverhulme Small Grant Award for her ongoing work on the photographic darkroom. She organized the 2023 international In the Photographic Darkroom conference and edited a special issue of PhotoResearcher on darkroom practices.
Her teaching encompasses postgraduate modules such as Exhibiting Photography (with The Photographers' Gallery), Engaging the Archive (with the University of Westminster Archive), and undergraduate-level Objects and Meanings: The Social Life of Material Culture. She supervises PhD research on topics like photographic history, museum studies, and the intersection of photography with leisure, transport, and modernity. Her recent publications and research projects examine the role of ordinary technological experiences in shaping photographic culture, transport networks, and the darkroom's chemical-industrial legacy. She is affiliated with the Institute for Modern and Contemporary Culture and the Centre for Research and Education in Arts and Media.
Scientific awards include the BA/Leverhulme Small Grant Award and the Westminster Researcher Development Award. Her supervised doctoral projects involve collaborations with institutions like the Imperial War Museums and National Science and Media Museum. Dominici is a member of the Royal Historical Society and the UKRI Peer Review College, contributing to editorial work and academic outreach in visual culture studies.
