Rick Barks is a Senior Lecturer in Photography at Staffordshire University. Born in Staffordshire (1964), he began his career as an engineering apprentice before transitioning into music, photography, and education. He holds an MA in Photographic Studies from the University of Westminster (FHEA, PGCHE). His work spans photomontage, audio visual installation, and traditional photographic practices, focusing on historical and contemporary debates in the medium.
Education includes an HND from Bournemouth and Poole College of Art and Design, followed by a Master’s at the University of Westminster. His professional experience includes roles as a photographer’s assistant, set builder for a music video production company, graphic designer, and freelance photographer for clients ranging from academic publishers to Japanese design agencies.
Teaching focuses on Photographic Theory, Contextual Studies, and Black and White Darkroom Skills. His work is featured in Ag Magazine, The International Journal for Photographic Arts and Practice, and The British Journal of Photography. He has taught across multiple colleges from Burton to Brighton over seventeen years.
