Dr. Sara Chong Kwan is a Senior Lecturer in Cultural and Historical Studies at the London College of Fashion, University of the Arts London. She coordinates undergraduate Final Year CHS work across the School of Design and Technology and leads the 'Sensory Fashion' unit, teaching all academic levels while supervising MA and PhD students.
Education:
- PhD in Fashion Studies, London College of Fashion, UAL (2010-2017)
- PgCert in Academic Practice, UAL (2018)
- BA (Hons) Menswear Design, Central St Martins, UAL (1998-2001)
- BA (Hons) Combined Studies (English/Social Sciences), University of Manchester (1991-1994)
Her research centers on sensory and embodied dimensions of dress, exploring everyday practices, sensory atmospheres, and phenomenological approaches. She integrates material culture and sensory methodologies to expand fashion research, bridging sociology, anthropology, and design practice through embodied inquiry and sensory studies.
Recent publications (2020-2025) emphasize decolonizing fashion via sensory workshopping (e.g., 'Fit But You Know It' project), while earlier works established foundations in sensory atmosphere and embodied methods. Her output consistently links sensory experience with social justice in fashion pedagogy and design.
Awards:
- Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA), 2018
Sara supervises doctoral students on diverse topics including everyday dress, sensory fashion, and decolonial approaches. She secured UAL Fast Track Funding (2023) for a walking workshop on decolonizing fashion education and received a Research Studentship (2011-2014) for her PhD.
She co-leads the 'Fit But You Know It' research project and convenes 'Sensory Roundtables', creating platforms for interdisciplinary exploration of sensory engagement in fashion through collaborative practice and critical pedagogy.
