Dr. Sara Brouwer is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Human Geography and Spatial Planning at Utrecht University's Faculty of Geosciences. Her work focuses on interdisciplinary human geography, particularly (postcolonial) agri-food systems, political ecology, food security, and urban foodscapes. She holds a PhD from the University of Edinburgh (funded by the Leverhulme Trust) and prior degrees from Utrecht University and the University of Edinburgh. Her research integrates ethnography and qualitative methods to explore food practices in Zimbabwe and migration-related food access challenges for urban migrants.

Research Themes: Her current projects include the MIGFOODCITY initiative (funded by UU Migration & Societal Change) examining migration, food, and inclusive cities. Other key areas include food pedagogies and participatory methods. She has published on topics like Kenya’s mobile agriculture discourse and urban Zimbabwe’s food security dynamics.
Teaching & Grants: Teaches courses in human geography, African studies, environmental sociology, and research design. Received UCU grants for inclusive pedagogy and UU funding for migration-related research. Created the children’s book Farai's Favorite Food to engage communities about food security research.
