Dr. Sara Baer is a Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and Senior Scientist/Director at the Kansas Biological Survey, University of Kansas. Her research focuses on plant, soil, and ecosystem ecology, particularly in grassland restoration and climate change resilience. She leads the Baer-lab, which investigates changes in plant and microbial communities during ecological restoration, emphasizing interactions between environmental heterogeneity, climate variability, and intraspecific variation in dominant species.
Her research spans topics such as nutrient cycling, carbon sequestration, and the role of ecotypic variation in grassland restoration. Notable projects include studies on restored prairies' resilience to climate change, soil biogeochemistry, and the impacts of dominant species on community assembly. She collaborates widely, including with the US Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) Network and international teams.
Dr. Baer’s recent work highlights the importance of soil heterogeneity in maintaining plant diversity, the effects of ecotypic variation on restoration success, and the link between microbial communities and ecosystem functions. Her publications emphasize global patterns of soil microbial abundance and the ecological consequences of restoration practices across diverse biogeographic regions.
Her research also explores the implications of climate change on grassland ecosystems, including drought tolerance in dominant species and the role of genetic diversity in adaptive management. She actively contributes to interdisciplinary projects, such as the Soil Data Harmonization (SoDaH) database, advancing open-source synthesis of soil data from global research networks.
