Sara Ann Knutson is an Assistant Professor of Teaching and Chair of Medieval Studies at the University of British Columbia’s Department of History (Faculty of Arts). Specializing in premodern Afro-Eurasia, Islamic World, and Scandinavian archaeology, her work bridges global history, material culture, and cultural heritage. She earned a Ph.D. in Anthropology from UC Berkeley, an MPhil from the University of Cambridge, and a BA in History from the University of Michigan.
Her research focuses on diasporas, digital humanities, and the intersection of materiality with themes like race, ethnicity, and public heritage. Current projects include Students as Partners initiatives, curricular reforms in Medieval Studies, and integrating digital tools in Middle East History education.
Publications include works on Silk Road networks, Viking Age migration, and Islamic Golden Age studies. She has received over 20 awards, including the Barakat Trust Major Research Award (2024) and UBC SoTL Seed Grant (2024).
Her teaching emphasizes pedagogical innovation, with courses like HIST 362: The Islamic Golden Age and HIST 101: Global History Before 1500 CE. Public engagement includes lectures on cultural heritage, museum anthropology, and Viking Age archaeology.
