Dr. Kate Franklin is a Senior Lecturer in Medieval History at Birkbeck, University of London, specializing in medieval Armenian archaeology and Silk Road studies. She holds a PhD in Anthropology from the University of Chicago (2014), and has conducted extensive fieldwork in Armenia and Afghanistan through collaborative projects like the Vayots Dzor Silk Road Survey. Her research explores medieval travel, material culture, and the intersection of politics and landscape in the Caucasus region.
Franklin's academic qualifications include a B.A. in Archaeological Studies from Yale (2005), an MPhil in Archaeology from Cambridge (2006), and FHEA accreditation (2020). She co-authored Landscapes and Environments of the Middle Ages (2023) and serves as co-PI on projects examining Armenian medieval settlements and Silk Road infrastructure.
Her research interests span medieval ideas of landscape, material cosmology, heritage politics, and retrofuturism in archaeology. She teaches modules on medieval global history, archaeological methodology, and cultural heritage management, including the MA in Medieval Studies. Her supervision focuses on interdisciplinary approaches to medieval material culture and Near Eastern archaeology.
Franklin has supervised doctoral theses on medieval kingship and authority in Europe and collaborated with institutions like the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography in Yerevan. Her work emphasizes ethical heritage practices and the role of material culture in understanding medieval worlds.
