Dr. Sapna Reheem Shaila is a Lecturer in Law at the University of Kent's Kent Law School, joining in January 2024. She holds a PhD in Law from King’s College London (2022), an LLM in Law, Development and Governance from SOAS (2015), and a BA/LLB (Hons) from NALSAR University (India). Previously, she held the Max Weber postdoctoral fellowship at the European University Institute (2022–2023). As a qualified Indian lawyer (non-practising) and Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy, she specializes in legal change dynamics, particularly in transitional states like East Timor. Her research examines international rule of law interventions, focusing on judiciary independence, anti-corruption reforms, and violence against women. She has five years of UK teaching experience at institutions like King's College London and SOAS. Her work also engages with policy organizations addressing rule of law globally.
Research Interests: Sapna's work spans the sociology of law, comparative legal cultures, transnational law, and law's role in development. Her fieldwork in East Timor (2018) highlighted how legal reforms reshape social structures and power dynamics. She advocates qualitative methods to explore power, agency, and social change in legal contexts.
Scientific Awards: She has received prestigious scholarships including the Dickson Poon Scholarship (King’s College London) and William Ross Murray Scholarship (SOAS). Her academic contributions include peer-reviewed articles and a chapter in The Cambridge Handbook of Foreign Judges on Domestic Courts (2023).
Teaching and Supervision: Sapna teaches The Law of Tort LAWS6510 and supervises students using qualitative research methods to study law's societal impacts. She emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to legal challenges.
