Sanna Mustasaari is an Associate Professor of family law at the University of Eastern Finland (UEF), affiliated with the Civil Law Team and the Center of Law and Welfare within the UEF Law School. She holds an LL.D and is a Docent. Her research focuses on family law, transnational child welfare, human rights, migration law, and feminist legal theory. She leads the research group Beyond Borders, Norms and Boxes (BBNB) and supervises multiple PhD candidates across institutions. Notable projects include the CARELA initiative on transnational childhoods and the SUOJATIE consortium on cross-border child protection. Her work bridges legal theory with socio-legal practices, addressing issues like legal pluralism, economic violence, and rights-based welfare governance.
Mustasaari’s recent publications analyze topics such as transnational child protection, legal epistemology in the Anthropocene, and housing compensation in divorce partitions. Her research often intersects migration, gender, and trans rights, emphasizing practical applications of legal frameworks in welfare contexts. She contributes to Nordic legal discourse through interdisciplinary approaches, addressing sustainability crises and ethical challenges in law.
