Sanna Hautala is a Professor in the Department of Welfare, Work and Citizenship at the University of Lapland's Faculty of Social Sciences. Her research focuses on disaster social work, mental health service recovery, substance use, and digital transformation in social services. She has led numerous projects addressing humanitarian crises, pandemic response, and e-service development in welfare organizations.
Research Interests: Her work explores proximity-based disaster response frameworks, metaphorical meaning-making in substance use narratives, and digital tools for social work. Key areas include recovery-oriented mental health systems, experts-by-experience involvement, and policy-driven service innovation.
Grants & Projects: She coordinates initiatives like KATA: Facing Humanitarian Catastrophes (2022–2024) and STePS 3.0: Social and Healthcare e-service Monitoring (2019–2022). These projects emphasize adaptive governance, multidisciplinary collaboration, and technology integration in crisis management and welfare systems.
Advising & Education: Prof. Hautala has supervised doctoral candidates in topics like disaster social work and child welfare decision-making. She actively contributes to curriculum development in digital and relational social work practices.
