Sanjiv Sam Gambhir, MD, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Radiology and Bio-X Program at Stanford University School of Medicine. He serves as Chair of the Department of Radiology and leads the Molecular Imaging Program at Stanford (MIPS), Precision Health and Integrated Diagnostics (PHIND) Center, and Canary Center for Cancer Early Detection. His research focuses on molecular imaging, cancer detection, and precision health. Gambhir holds academic appointments in Bioengineering and Materials Science & Engineering. He has pioneered innovations in PET/CT imaging, reporter gene systems, and immunoPET for monitoring immunotherapies.
Education: PhD in Biomathematics (UCLA, 1990), MD (UCLA, 1993), BS in Physics (Arizona State University, 1983).
Research interests include developing imaging agents for cancer, immune cell tracking, and non-invasive diagnostics. Over 100+ scientific awards highlight his contributions, including the J. Allyn Taylor Prize, IEEE Marie Sklodowska-Curie Award, and AAAS Fellowship. He has authored >1,500 publications and 100+ patents, including breakthroughs in reporter gene imaging and nanoparticle-based diagnostics.
Leadership roles include Head of the Nuclear Medicine Division, Director of MIPS, and Chair of the Society of Chairs of Academic Radiology Departments. His work bridges academia and industry through advisory roles at institutions like the NIH, FDA, and global medical societies.
