Professor Sanjib Bhakta is a full Professor of Molecular Microbiology and Biochemistry at Birkbeck, University of London, and holds affiliations with UCL. He leads the ISMB-Mycobacteria Research Laboratory, focusing on antimicrobial resistance and novel drug discovery for tuberculosis (TB). His research integrates microbiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology to identify therapeutic targets and develop anti-mycobacterial agents.
He earned degrees from the University of Calcutta, Visva-Bharati University, Bose Institute (PhD), and a DPhil from the University of Oxford. His career includes roles at the Institute of Structural and Molecular Biology (ISMB), where he was promoted to Professor in 2018. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and Royal Society of Biology.
Research interests include tackling antimicrobial resistance via drug repurposing, efflux pump inhibition, and mycobacterial metabolism. His lab specializes in high-throughput screening for inhibitors and validating therapeutic targets using whole-cell and enzymatic assays.
Key publications highlight work on phenyloxazoline synthase inhibitors, mycobactin analogues, and carprofen’s bactericidal mechanisms. Awards include the Microbiology Society Outreach Prize (2020) and Birkbeck Public Engagement Award (2019). He has supervised over 17 PhD students and contributed to initiatives like the ‘Joi Hok’ TB awareness project.
Professional roles include Chief Editor of Frontiers in Antibiotics and advisory positions with UKRI and the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission. His labs are core members of UCL-TB, NTM Network UK, and the Antibiotic Discovery Accelerator Network (ABX).
