Research Interests
Professor Klasa’s research spans several inter-related domains of corporate finance and governance. His primary focus lies in understanding how product market competition and labor market frictions shape corporate financial policies. He examines the determinants and consequences of capital structure choices, the role of cash holdings and hedging behavior in mitigating risk, and the strategic implications of mergers and acquisitions. Additionally, he investigates corporate governance mechanisms, including executive compensation, board structures, and the protection of intellectual property such as trade secrets. His work often integrates large-scale empirical analyses with rich theoretical insights to inform both academic understanding and practical policy.
Publications & Trends
Across his body of work, two dominant strands emerge: (1) the interplay between market structure and corporate financial decisions, and (2) governance and contracting issues within firms. Recent articles reveal heightened attention to regional economic shocks, anticompetitive effects of horizontal mergers, and information leakage during nonpublic negotiations. Earlier studies laid foundations by documenting leverage targets, cash management under refinancing risk, and the impact of industry concentration on disclosure practices.
