
Sandrine Colard

Sandrine Colard is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Africana Studies, Arts, Culture and Media at Rutgers University-Newark. Her research focuses on modern and contemporary African arts and photography, with emphasis on Central Africa.
Her educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Art History from Columbia University
- M.A. in Africana Studies from New York University
Dr. Colard explores post-colonialism in the arts, portraiture, vernacular photography, gender representation, and domesticity through fieldwork in Belgium, Kinshasa, and Lubumbashi (DRC). Her current book project investigates colonial Congo photography (1885-1960).
Her publications span journals like African Arts and exhibition catalogs including "Sammy Baloji" (2016), revealing trends in Central African photographic practices and post-colonial art theory.
She has received prestigious fellowships:
