Sandra Kane-Gill is a Professor of Pharmacy and Therapeutics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy and serves as Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs and Programmatic Innovation. She holds a concurrent appointment as Professor at the Center for Critical Care Nephrology and practices as a Critical Care Medication Safety Pharmacist at UPMC. Dr. Kane-Gill earned her PharmD from the University of Toledo, followed by a pharmacy residency at West Virginia University Hospital and a MS in Pharmacy Administration from The Ohio State University, where she also completed a critical care fellowship and implementation science certification.
Her research focuses on medication safety in critically ill patients, particularly pharmacovigilance for nephrotoxic drugs and acute kidney injury (AKI). She leads federally funded studies (AHRQ, NIDDK) applying implementation science to improve evidence-based practices. With over 250 publications and 200+ presentations, her work emphasizes clinical decision support systems, telemedicine, and AI in critical care. She edited books on high-risk medications and drug-induced complications, and serves on editorial boards for Critical Care Medicine and Annals of Pharmacotherapy.

Dr. Kane-Gill has held leadership roles including SCCM Executive Committee President (2022) and is a Fellow of both the American College of Critical Care Medicine and American College of Clinical Pharmacy. Her awards include the 2023 ACCP Therapeutic Frontiers Lecture Award and recognition as a global expert in medication errors (Expertscape).
She advises on national guidelines for critical care and AKI, co-developed the AKIP nephrotoxin list, and pioneered telepharmacy applications during the pandemic. Her work bridges implementation science with critical care pharmacy practice, emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration for patient safety.
