Sandra Hewett is a Professor in the Departments of Biology and Neuroscience at Syracuse University's College of Arts and Sciences. Her research examines mechanisms of cell death in the central nervous system, focusing on interactions between excitotoxicity and inflammation with particular emphasis on astrocyte/neuron interactions.
Her lab investigates molecular mediators including inducible forms of nitric oxide synthase, cyclooxygenase, L-12/15 lipoxygenase, IL-1ß, and the astrocyte system xc- transporter, using both in vitro and in vivo models of injury. Research employs a 'molecules to mouse' and 'mouse to molecules' approach to understand post-ischemic inflammation's role in neuronal injury progression.
Recent publications demonstrate focus on glutamate/GABA transport balance, neurotransmitter transporters in CNS pathophysiology, neuroprotective mechanisms, and the role of system xc- in neurotoxicity and neuroprotection. Her work has received continuous NIH funding since 1997 and includes a recent grant to study physiological mechanisms governing excitatory/inhibitory balance in the brain.
