Sandra Brown is an Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Biology at the University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Land and Food Systems. She serves as Associate Dean, Academic, and leads interdisciplinary research in soil-water sustainability, resource management, and watershed science.
- Education: PhD in Interdisciplinary Studies in Resource Management (UBC, 1997); MSc in Soil Physics (UBC, 1990); BSc in Physical Geography (UBC, 1984); Post-Doc in Gender and Resources (IDRC, 1998).
Her research spans soil science, water governance, and sustainable agriculture, with fieldwork in Nepal and Colombia. She employs GIS, participatory methods, and climate adaptation frameworks to address land degradation, carbon storage, and rural water allocation. Recent projects focus on extractive frontiers’ impacts on water metabolism and transdisciplinary education.
Selected publications highlight her work on soil-water retention dynamics, sustainable soil pedagogy, and water governance hierarchies in Colombia. She has supervised PhD students like Parisa Rinaldi (UBC/Universidad de los Andes) and Clara Roa-Garcia (co-supervised with Dr. Maja Krzic).
- Scientific Awards: Richards Faculty Service Award (2016), UBC Soil Science Teaching and Mentorship Award (2013), AUCC Canada-Latin America Research Exchange Grant (2006), IDRC postdoctoral grant (1997).
Her teaching includes courses on soil science, watershed science, and sustainable soil management. She integrates problem-based and team-based learning, emphasizing equity and sustainability.
