Sandie Friedman is an Assistant Professor in the University Writing Program at George Washington University (GW), affiliated with the Columbian College of Arts & Sciences. She previously served as Director of the First-Year Writing Program and Deputy Director of the GW Writing Center. Her academic background includes a PhD in American Studies from NYU, an MA in English and Comparative Literature from Columbia University, and a BA in English and Philosophy from Barnard College. Prior to GW, she held a postdoctoral position at Princeton University's Writing Program.
Her research focuses on multidisciplinary approaches to writing instruction, antiracist pedagogy, and labor-based grading systems. She has published in peer-reviewed journals such as Composition Forum, Enculturation, and Journal of Literacy Innovation, and her recent work critiques grading practices through an antiracist lens. Friedman's teaching spans topics from film studies to contemporary radical fiction, with her current course The New Vanguard: Women Writing Radical Fiction being particularly notable.
Her professional development includes participation in the 2018 Dartmouth Writing Research Seminar. Beyond academia, her essays and creative writing appear in literary journals like Ethel and The Rumpus.
