Sander Van Der Leeuw is an External Faculty member at Arizona State University and co-director of the ASU-SFI Center for Biosocial Complex Systems. He is also an External Professor at the Santa Fe Institute and a corresponding member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Arts and Sciences. He served as founding director of ASU's School of Human Evolution and Social Change (2003–2011) and dean of the School of Sustainability (2010–2013), with prior teaching roles in Amsterdam, Leiden, Cambridge, and Paris (Sorbonne).
Trained as an archaeologist and historian, Sander Van Der Leeuw specializes in long-term human-environment interactions and is a pioneer in applying Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS) theory to socio-environmental challenges, technology, and innovation. His work integrates archaeology, sustainability, and systems science, with a focus on societal resilience and innovation dynamics.
His research has been recognized internationally, most notably with the Champion of the Earth for Science and Innovation award from UNEP in 2012. He coordinated the interdisciplinary ARCHAEOMEDES program (1991–2000), where he first applied CAS to environmental problems in southern Europe, and held a chair at the Institut Universitaire de France (2003–2008).

Throughout his career, Van Der Leeuw has led major interdisciplinary research initiatives and academic institutions, contributing significantly to sustainability science and the development of complex systems approaches in the social sciences.
