Samuel R. Wilson

Samuel R. Wilson, MD, MSCR serves as an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology within the Department of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. His clinical and research focus centers on non-malignant hematology with particular expertise in sickle cell disease and related red blood cell disorders.

Dr. Wilson completed his undergraduate education at Northwestern University, earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan, completed residency training at Michigan Medicine, and finished fellowship training along with a Master of Science in Clinical Research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

His research interests focus on the evolving challenges in sickle cell disease management as patients live longer, particularly examining complications in the aging sickle cell population. Current work aims to improve health outcomes for adults with sickle cell disease through better understanding of disease progression and developing targeted interventions.

Recent publications demonstrate significant contributions to medical imaging literature, particularly in ultrasound applications, liver elastography, and inflammatory bowel disease diagnostics, reflecting interdisciplinary research spanning hematology, radiology, and gastroenterology.

Dr. Wilson actively participates in developing clinical consensus guidelines through collaborations with organizations including the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound and World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology, contributing to standardization of diagnostic protocols in liver and bowel imaging.

His laboratory work includes tissue engineering research with emphasis on liver organoid development, demonstrating a broad research portfolio that bridges hematology with regenerative medicine and diagnostic imaging technologies.
