Dr. Samuel Phillips is a Molecular Microbiologist and Research Fellow at the Centre for Bioinnovation within the School of Health - Biomedicine at the University of the Sunshine Coast. With over 20 years of laboratory experience, he has established himself as a leading expert in Chlamydia and HPV research, with a particular focus on vaccine development for both human and animal applications.
Dr. Phillips' educational background includes a PhD from UniSC, along with BAppSci (Hons), BSci, and DippAppSci degrees from RMIT University. His research interests span across multiple disciplines including molecular microbiology, STI transmission and treatment, diagnostics, genotyping, and population effects of vaccines.
His research program has three primary foci: (1) Development of vaccines for Chlamydia in koalas, which has led to world-first studies and collaborations with Professor Peter Timms; (2) HPV diagnostics and surveillance in human populations, including multinational pharmaceutical drug trials; and (3) Molecular studies of pathogen-host interactions in both human and animal systems. His work bridges the gap between human and veterinary medicine, with significant contributions to understanding disease transmission and developing prevention technologies.
Dr. Phillips has published over 50 papers in prestigious journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet Infectious Diseases, the Journal of the American Medical Association, the International Journal of Cancer, and The Journal of Infectious Diseases. His publications, cited over 960 times with an h-index of 18, demonstrate a consistent trajectory of high-impact research with increasing focus on wildlife disease management and translational applications of microbiological research.
As a member of UniSC's Register of HDR Supervisors, Dr. Phillips actively mentors Special Research Projects (SRP), Honours students, and Higher Degree by Research candidates. His collaborations extend to major institutions including WHO reference laboratories and international research teams working on Chlamydia and HPV.
Dr. Phillips is affiliated with the Centre for Bioinnovation at UniSC, where he leads research efforts focused on developing alternative therapies for infectious diseases and prevention technologies. His laboratory work combines molecular biology techniques with clinical and wildlife applications, creating a unique interdisciplinary approach to combating infectious diseases in both human and animal populations.
