Samuel Greene is a Professor of Russian Politics at King’s College London, affiliated with the School of Politics & Economics and the Russia Institute within the Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy. He holds a PhD from the London School of Economics (LSE) and has extensive experience in Moscow, including roles at the New Economic School and Carnegie Moscow Center. His research focuses on power dynamics in Russia, authoritarianism, and societal transformation, with a particular interest in social media’s role in mobilization and research methodologies. Greene is Editor-in-Chief of Russian Politics & Law, an Associate Fellow at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, and a Trustee of Pushkin House. He has authored influential books such as Putin v. the People (2019) and Moscow in Movement (2014), and his work appears in journals like Comparative Political Studies and Journal of Democracy. His awards include the Davis Center Book Prize (2015, 2020) and the CSEEES Fellowship (2022).
Greene’s research explores citizen-state interactions, emotions in autocratic contexts, and post-Soviet citizenship. He supervises PhD students on themes like Russian opposition movements and post-Soviet political transitions. His recent projects include analyzing Belarusian uprising media dynamics and state-mobilized movements in Crimea. He frequently comments on Russian politics in media outlets like Foreign Policy and The Washington Post.
