Samuel C. Fletcher is Professor of Philosophy of Physics at the University of Oxford's Faculty of Philosophy and a Fellow of Merton College. He maintains affiliations as a Resident Fellow of the Minnesota Center for Philosophy of Science and an External Member of the Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität. Previously, he served as Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities (2015-2017) and held multiple Marie Curie Fellowships at MCMP.
Education includes:
- AB in Physics from Princeton University
- MA in Philosophy (2012) and MS in Statistics (2012) from UC Irvine
- PhD in Philosophy (2014) from UC Irvine
Research focuses on foundational questions bridging physics, statistics, and philosophy of science. Key areas include:
- Intertheoretic reduction in classical mechanics and general relativity
- Physical interpretations of gravitational waves and thermodynamics
- Conceptual basis of computation and statistical inference

As Principal Investigator, he leads the NSF-sponsored project A Modern Philosophy for Classical Statistical Testing and Estimation. He actively organizes academic workshops including conferences on quantum/statistical physics (2022) and teaching statistics in philosophy (2023).
