Samuel Bentley holds the Billy and Ann Harrison Chair in Sedimentary Geology at Louisiana State University (LSU) within the Department of Geology and Geophysics, College of Science, where he has served since 1999. He concurrently maintains an adjunct professorship at Memorial University of Newfoundland and previously held leadership roles including LSU Vice President for Research and Economic Development (2019-2022) and Director of the LSU Coastal Studies Institute (2013-2017).
His educational background includes a BA in Theater with minor in Geology from the University of Georgia (1985), MS in Geology from the same institution (1992), and PhD in Coastal Geological Oceanography from SUNY Stony Brook (1998).
Bentley's research centers on coastal sedimentology and deltaic systems, with expertise in sediment radiochemistry, continental shelf dynamics, bioturbation, and sedimentary fabric modeling. His work provides critical insights into Mississippi River Delta evolution, integrating field studies, geophysical surveys, and numerical modeling to address coastal land loss and restoration challenges.
