Samu Niskanen is Professor of Medieval History at the University of Helsinki's Faculty of Arts, Department of Philosophy, History and Art Studies. He is also affiliated with the Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science (HELSUS) and Helsinki Institute of Urban and Regional Studies (Urbaria). His research focuses on intellectual life in the Middle Ages, medieval literature publication, transmission, and reception, with special emphasis on letters, monastic theology, and crusades.
Niskanen serves as Principal Investigator for major research projects including Medieval Publishing from c. 1000 to 1500 (ERC-funded) and Authorial Publishing in Early Medieval Europe (Academy of Finland). He supervises doctoral candidates in Language Studies and History/Cultural Heritage programs, and mentors postdoctoral researchers.
His key publications examine medieval publication practices, textual transmission, and intellectual networks. Recent works explore authorial publication patterns, manuscript dissemination, and the relationship between power structures and textual production from Late Antiquity through the Renaissance.

Niskanen maintains extensive international collaborations as Hugh Price Fellow at Jesus College Oxford and General Editor for Toronto's British Writers series. He regularly organizes academic workshops on medieval publication practices and Victorine influences in Scandinavia.
