Associate Professor Sammy Chan (University of New South Wales, School of Materials Science & Engineering) is a leading researcher in energy materials, hydrogen storage, and metal matrix composites. With over 75 refereed journal papers and 3 book chapters, he has made significant contributions to understanding hydrogen embrittlement, enhancing electrode conductivity in Ni-MH batteries, and developing high-performance nano-reinforced aluminum composites. His teaching focuses on nanotechnology, mechanical properties of materials, and corrosion control, consistently receiving excellent student evaluations.
- Research interests: Energy materials, hydrogen storage alloys, nanostructured composites, electrochemical systems
- Appointments: Senior Lecturer (2003-2008), Associate Professor (2009-present)
His work on hydrogen trapping mechanisms and Ni(OH)₂ electrode synthesis has advanced energy storage technologies. Recent publications highlight innovations in carbon nitride nanotubes, high entropy alloy nanocomposites, and hydrogen adsorption materials. Awards include Fellowships from the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (UK) and the Australian Institute of Energy, alongside Chartered Engineer and Scientist designations.
Supervised 12 postgraduate and 16 Honours students since 2003 (7 postgraduates graduated). Articles focus on hydrogen storage optimization, nanomaterials, and mechanical property enhancements in alloys. Peer-reviewed outputs include high-impact studies on g-C3N4 nanotubes, creep-resistant composites, and electrochemical battery materials.
