Samir M Parikh, M.D. is Professor of Internal Medicine and Pharmacology at UT Southwestern Medical Center, where he serves as Chief of the Division of Nephrology. He holds the Robert Tucker Hayes Distinguished Chair in Nephrology and the Ruth W. and Milton P. Levy, Sr. Chair in Molecular Nephrology. Previously, he was Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Associate Vice Chair for Research at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center until joining UT Southwestern in 2021.
His educational background includes a magna cum laude chemistry degree from Harvard University, a medical degree as valedictorian from Vanderbilt (receiving the Founder’s Medal), and nephrology training at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He currently serves as Chair Emeritus of the NIH Pathobiology of Kidney Disease study section and will assume presidency of the American Society of Nephrology in 2026.
Dr. Parikh’s research focuses on metabolic mechanisms of kidney resilience, particularly how energy metabolism and vascular pathways protect against acute and chronic kidney injury. His work centers on NAD+ biosynthesis, PGC1α-mediated mitochondrial biogenesis, and the Angiopoietin-Tie2 vascular signaling axis. The lab investigates how these pathways fail in conditions like sepsis, cisplatin toxicity, and aging, with emphasis on translational applications for renal protection.
His publication record demonstrates consistent focus on metabolic adaptation in kidney stress, with recent work expanding into vascular leakage syndromes, mitochondrial genetics, and therapeutic interventions targeting energy pathways. The research bridges basic science and clinical applications, frequently appearing in high-impact journals including Nature, Science Translational Medicine, and Journal of Clinical Investigation.
- Sir William Osler Award (2018)
- Donald Seldin Award (2019)
- Inducted into American Society for Clinical Investigation (2017)
- Inducted into American Association of Physicians (2021)
- Inducted into ACCA (2025)
Dr. Parikh has led NIH and Doris Duke Foundation-funded programs training researchers across all career stages. His leadership includes directing UT Southwestern’s nephrology division and shaping national research priorities through the American Society of Nephrology. The Parikh Laboratory maintains active collaborations with vascular biology and metabolism experts, with current projects exploring mitochondrial transplantation and NAD+ precursor therapies for kidney injury.
