Samir Khuller is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Maryland. As of March 2019, he became Chair of the newly formed Computer Science department at Northwestern University's McCormick School of Engineering. He holds a B.Tech. from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Cornell University. His research focuses on algorithms, combinatorial optimization, approximation algorithms, and scheduling. Notably, he received the Distinguished Scholar Teacher Award from the University of Maryland (2007-2008).
He teaches courses such as CMSC 644 (Data Science Algorithms), CMSC 451 (Algorithms), and advanced topics like Combinatorial Optimization (CMSC 858Y). Khuller has advised numerous students, including PhD recipients Rajiv Gandhi (2003), Azarakhsh Malekian (2009), and Julian Mestre (2007). He is actively involved in organizing conferences and workshops, including MAPSP 2019 and events related to flexible network design and data center scheduling. His research projects include the Gas Station, RideShare, and Thermal Scheduling initiatives.
Khuller has delivered impactful talks on topics like energy-efficient scheduling, data transmission optimization, and dense subgraph applications. His work bridges theoretical computer science with practical applications in data management and algorithm design.
