Samir Id Lahoucine is a Senior Geneticist at the Genetics Unit within the Department of Animal and Veterinary Sciences at Scotland's Rural College (SRUC). His research focuses on genomics, genetic breeding, and molecular mechanisms in livestock, particularly in sheep, cattle, and horse populations. He leads and collaborates on projects such as the Welsh Sheep Breeding Project and the EGENES - Texel initiative, which aim to improve genetic selection and breeding practices. His work addresses transmission ratio distortion (TRD), reproductive traits, and genomic evaluation techniques.
- Key Research Areas: Animal genetics, genomics, Mendelian inheritance, and livestock reproduction.
- Projects:
- Principal Investigator of the Welsh Sheep Breeding Project (2019–2024), funded by the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board.
- Co-Investigator of EGENES - Texel (2019–2026), supported by the Texel Sheep Society.
- Awards & Grants: Funding from Texel Sheep Society and AHDB for genetic improvement and breeding research.
Dr. Lahoucine's research integrates statistical methods and genomic tools to understand genetic mechanisms affecting reproduction, fertility, and breed characteristics. His studies have identified genomic regions linked to TRD and gametic incompatibility, contributing to advancements in livestock breeding strategies.
