Sami Al-Izzi is a Research Fellow at the School of Physics, University of New South Wales. His research focuses on applying theoretical physics and applied mathematics to developmental and mechano-biological problems, particularly studying the interplay between geometry, forces, and cell signaling in biological systems. He holds a PhD in Mathematics of Systems from the University of Warwick and Sorbonne Université (Institut Curie), an MSc from Warwick, an MASt in Mathematics from the University of Cambridge, and a BSc in Theoretical Physics from University College London.
Al-Izzi’s research interests center on membrane dynamics, actomyosin networks, and viral transport mechanisms. His work combines soft matter physics, differential geometry, and hydrodynamics to model lipid membrane tubes and cellular processes. Notable contributions include studies on HIV capsid-nucleoporin interactions and the mechanics of active biomembranes. He is part of the Theory of Biological Systems group led by Dr. Richard G. Morris.
Key research themes include ATP-regulated contractility, gauge theory in fluid surfaces, and osmoregulation in biomembrane tubes. His publications span Physical Review Letters, Nature, and Journal of Fluid Mechanics, reflecting interdisciplinary approaches to biophysical systems.
