Dr. Samantha McLean is an Associate Professor in Pharmacology at the University of Bradford, affiliated with the School of Pharmacy & Medical Sciences and the Faculty of Life Sciences. She holds leadership roles as Director of Admissions and Marketing for the School of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences, and Deputy Director of Research at Health, Society, People and Place within the Faculty of Life Sciences. Her academic background includes a PhD in Neuropharmacology (2010) and a Pharmacology degree from the University of Leeds (2006).
Her research focuses on developing preclinical models for psychiatric disorders, pharmacogenomics in mental health treatment optimization, and neuropharmacological mechanisms underlying cognition. She collaborates with pharmaceutical companies and NHS trusts, and has secured funding from the Royal Society UK and Alzheimer’s Research UK. Her work integrates interdisciplinary approaches across mental health, pharmacogenomics, and cognitive neuroscience.
McLean’s educational leadership includes managing recruitment strategies for undergraduate and postgraduate programs in pharmacy and clinical sciences. She is an external examiner for King’s College London’s MSc Neuroscience program and an Associate Editor for the Journal of Neuroscience Research. She also serves on the Pharmacy and Pharmacogenomics Working Group for the Genomic Medicine Service Alliance (Northeast and Yorkshire).
Her research interests span dopamine signaling in aging, antipsychotic drug development, and the implementation of pharmacogenetic testing. She has supervised five PhD students and contributed to over 19 peer-reviewed publications. Her awards include Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2020) and board membership at the Cellar Trust mental health charity.
In education innovation, she studies the impact of online teaching methodologies and team-based learning. Her current projects include validating stem-cell secretome therapies for neurodegeneration and exploring biological rhythms in cognitive dysfunction.
