Dr Samantha May is a Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Relations at the University of Aberdeen's School of Social Science. She holds an AHRC-funded doctorate from Aberdeen focused on Islamist ideologies. Her research examines the intersection of politics and religion, with specializations in Political Islam, Islamist movements, and the socio-political role of zakat in the UK. Dr May leads undergraduate courses in Political Islam: Ideologies and Practices and a Masters module on Religion, Conflict and Security.
Her research investigates the political economy of Islamic charity, challenges to UK charity law, and alternative welfare systems in Muslim communities. Current projects include a Leverhulme-funded study on 'Zakat in the UK' exploring British Muslim citizenship. Key publications analyze Hamas, Hezbollah, and sacred territoriality.
Awards include the Student Choice 'Most Inspirational Lecturer' (2016) and 'Best Lecturer' (2014).
