Samantha Hunt is a Professor of Writing at Pratt Institute’s School of Liberal Arts & Sciences. She holds an MFA from Warren Wilson College and a BFA from the University of Vermont. Her work spans novels, short stories, and non-fiction, exploring themes like haunting, motherhood, and existential inquiry. Hunt has been honored with a Guggenheim Fellowship, National Book Foundation’s 5 Under 35, and the Bard Fiction Prize. Her research interests include ghost narratives, historical reimagining, and the intersection of personal and cultural memory. Notable publications include The Seas, Mr. Splitfoot, and the non-fiction The Unwritten Book. Beyond academia, she is a mother of three, gardener, and beekeeper.
Her creative process often involves investigating liminal spaces—both literal (e.g., haunted homes) and metaphorical (e.g., societal norms around motherhood). Recent works like Go, Team (The Atlantic, 2020) and The Unwritten Book (2022) reflect her preoccupation with collective storytelling and mortality. Hunt’s interdisciplinary approach bridges literature with民俗学, ecology, and spirituality, evident in projects like adapting her story The Yellow into a film featured at the Toronto International Film Festival.
