Sam Pizelo is an Assistant Professor of Game Studies at the Institute for Communication, Culture, Information and Technology (ICCIT) at the University of Toronto Mississauga. He is concurrently a Doctoral Student in Literature at the University of California, Davis. His research focuses on the global history of games as modeling technologies, examining their use in conceptualizing systems from ancient divination practices to contemporary machine learning applications. His dissertation, 'Modeling Revolution: A Global History of Games as Model Systems,' explores the centrality of games in systems modeling from the 17th century to the mid-20th century.
Education: Doctoral Student in Literature at UC Davis. Research interests include global science/technology studies, game design, and the intersections of literature and science. Professional experience includes leading research projects and teaching undergraduate courses in critical data science, game design, and science studies.
Teaching expertise includes undergraduate courses in critical data science and game design. He has published in journals such as Representations, Digital Humanities Quarterly, ROMchip, and Game Studies.
