Dr. Sam Marsh is a Lecturer in the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences at the University of Sheffield, specializing in mathematics education and research. Based in room G9 of the Hicks Building, he focuses on teaching roles and union activities while maintaining research interests in algebraic topology and foundational mathematics.
Marsh completed his PhD in algebraic topology under Prof. Neil Strickland at the University of Sheffield, with his thesis exploring Morava E-theories of finite general linear groups. His academic work spans abstract mathematics and educational innovation, including a 2016 conference paper on flipped teaching methods in engineering education.
His 2022 publication in Algebraic & Geometric Topology investigates chromatic homology theories for finite groups, reflecting his expertise in algebraic topology. Earlier educational research emphasizes pedagogical strategies to improve student engagement and performance through flipped learning models.
Marsh is actively involved in the University and College Union (UCU), serving as a trustee director of the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) since August 2024. He previously held leadership roles within Sheffield UCU, including Branch President (2018-2020), and contributed to national negotiations on USS pension schemes from 2018-2022.
He teaches courses such as MAS362/61017: Financial Mathematics and MAS261: Further General Engineering Mathematics, while creating educational resources like videos on differentiation, complex numbers, and differential equations. Additional materials include a talk on non-standard analysis and historical research on topological foundations.
