Sam Gillies is a Senior Research Fellow at the Department of Media, Humanities and the Arts, University of Huddersfield. He is affiliated with the Centre for Research in New Music and the Centre for Experimental Practices (CXP). His work focuses on experimental music, sound art, and digital archiving, with a particular interest in 20th-century avant-garde compositions and their revival through live performances and archival projects. Gillies has organized major events like the Electric Spring Festival and contributed to projects such as 'TAAT: Determining the best approach, scale and feasibility for new toolsets in analysing large tape archives' (2025–2026) and 'Ernest Berk: An Expressionist Outsider' (2023–2027).
His research outputs include curated exhibitions, live music performances, and artefacts such as the 'Diversed Tapes: Electronic Music of Ernest Berk' (2024) and the digital archive 'The Gerhard Machine'. Gillies has served as an external PhD examiner at Monash University and actively participates in international conferences and workshops, emphasizing collaborative approaches to musicology and experimental media.
Key projects involve reviving neglected works of composers like Ernest Berk and Roberto Gerhard, blending historical scholarship with contemporary performance practices.
