Sam Coley is an Associate Professor (International) at Birmingham City University, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts, Design and Media and the Birmingham School of Media. As Course Leader for the MA in Media Production, he specializes in radio production, teaching documentary production, commercial production, and audio presentation skills. With a background in the UK and New Zealand commercial radio industry, Coley bridges academic and professional practice, having worked at TRN radio network in Auckland and UK radio during the 1990s.
Research and Industry Connections: His research focuses on radio and popular music, alongside documentary production. Coley is a Trustee of the Charles Parker Archive Trust and has served on the Grand Jury of the New York Radio Festival since 2012. He maintains strong ties with the UK commercial radio sector, including Greatest Hits Radio, Absolute Radio, BBC, and community radio networks.
Notable Projects: He led the Cities of Sound documentary series, funded by the Audio Content Fund during the COVID-19 crisis, which employed Birmingham City University students and reached over a million UK listeners. Coley’s work emphasizes practical experience, mentoring students who have secured roles at the BBC and on popular TV shows like The Great British Bake Off.
