Salvatore Patera

Salvatore Patera is an Associate Professor at the University of International Studies of Rome (UNINT) specializing in teaching, special pedagogy and educational research (SSD M-PED/03). He holds multiple leadership positions including President of the master's degree course "Languages for innovative teaching and interculturality" (LM-37), Director of the Specialization Course for Educational Support Activities for Pupils with Disabilities, Rectoral delegate for initial teacher training, and President of the University Entrepreneurship Commission. He is also a member of the teaching body for the Global Studies & Innovation doctorate at UNINT.

Professor Patera's research focuses on systemic-constructivist approaches to education, with particular emphasis on summative and formative assessment for developing key transversal skills, the concept of "learning to learn," and participatory action research in organizational and community contexts. His work spans educational theory, digital educational poverty, intercultural education, and community pedagogy, with strong connections to agrobiodiversity and social empowerment.

His extensive publication record (over 100 works) reveals a clear evolution from foundational pedagogical theory to increasingly specialized applications in digital learning, educational poverty, and cross-cultural educational practices. A consistent thread throughout his work is the examination of "learning to learn" as a core competency across diverse cultural contexts, particularly comparing Latin American and European educational systems. His most recent research addresses the cultural dimensions of digital educational poverty and the intergenerational digital divide between students and teachers.

Professor Patera has been actively involved in numerous international research collaborations, including serving as a post-doc research fellow at INVALSI (National Institute for the Evaluation of the Education and Training System) from 2017-2020, where he focused on evaluating key skills related to "learning to learn." He has also served as a consultant and facilitator for projects funded by the Fund to combat child educational poverty. His international collaborations extend to universities and research institutions across Latin America, including Universidad de Zaragoza (Spain), Universidad Politécnica Salesiana (Ecuador), Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil), Universidad del Sur (Argentina), and INEED (Uruguay).
