Saloni Mathur is a Professor of Modern & Contemporary South Asian Art at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and currently serves as Chair of the Department of Art History. Her work bridges art history and anthropology, focusing on the visual cultures of modern South Asia and its diasporas, colonial/postcolonial criticism, and global museum studies.

Her research explores the intersections of art, empire, and globalization, with a particular emphasis on decolonial practices, museum activism, and the socio-political dimensions of contemporary art. She has taught courses on museum studies, postcolonial theory, and the global impact of contemporary art.
Recent publications analyze themes such as decolonization, migration, and the Bauhaus legacy in South Asia. Her book A Fragile Inheritance (2019) examines radical stakes in contemporary Indian art.
