Salomi Boukala is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Social Anthropology, Panteion University, School of Social Sciences. Her research focuses on critical discourse studies, political communication, media discourse analysis, and the intersection of social media with identity construction. She explores topics like nationalism, supranational identities, language ideologies, and ethnography of Jewish communities. Boukala teaches courses including Anthropology and Critical Discourse Analysis, Anthropology of Europe and the European Union, and Media Anthropology.
Her work examines discursive constructions of political dichotomies, post-politics, and online ethnography. Notable areas include analyzing antisemitism in Greek political discourse, Chinese grassroots cybernationalism, and the role of memory in Sephardic Jewish identity through digital platforms. She employs discourse-historical approaches and ethnographic methods to study media representation of 'the Other' in Europe.
Boukala's recent publications (2021-2025) critically analyze political rhetoric around migration, pandemic securitization, and far-right discourse legitimacy. Her research often bridges anthropology with sociolinguistics, focusing on how language and media shape political and cultural identities. She contributes to understanding how digital spaces mediate ethnic/national identities and political ideologies.
