معرفی
Dr Sally Patfield is a Lecturer and Senior Research Fellow within the Teachers and Teaching Research Centre at the University of Newcastle's School of Education. With over 15 years of experience in educational contexts including as a primary teacher in NSW public schools, she has established herself as a leading researcher in educational equity and sociology of education.
Her research interests focus on the sociology of education, higher education, social inequality, and teacher professional learning. Dr Patfield's work critically examines structural inequalities that shape young people's educational experiences, particularly for first-in-family university students, rural and remote students, and those from low socio-economic backgrounds. She investigates how educational institutions both reproduce and potentially alleviate inequality, with special attention to the intersection of race, class, and geographic location.
Her recent publications reveal a consistent focus on educational equity, with particular emphasis on first-generation university students, rural education access, and the limitations of current equity policies. Her research demonstrates how outreach initiatives often pathologize disadvantaged students rather than addressing systemic barriers within educational institutions themselves. She has developed innovative frameworks for understanding educational aspirations that consider both material constraints and emotional dimensions.

She has developed impactful interventions including the 'Aspirations: Supporting Student Futures' professional development course completed by 1,500 Australian teachers and a Massive Open Online Course for parents. Her work bridges academic research with practical applications to transform educational policy and practice toward greater equity.
