Dr. Shaywitz's research focuses on the epidemiology and neurobiology of dyslexia, particularly through the landmark Connecticut Longitudinal Study. Her work has demonstrated that dyslexia affects boys and girls equally and is characterized by a divergence between high intelligence and unexpectedly low reading achievement. She has pioneered efforts to close the 'action gap' in dyslexia by advocating for early screening and evidence-based interventions. Her research interests include dyslexia, learning disabilities, neurology, pediatrics, and cognitive neuroscience.
Her influential research, particularly the longitudinal studies following children into adulthood, reveals that the reading achievement gap between typical and dyslexic readers emerges as early as first grade and persists. This has led to the development of the Shaywitz DyslexiaScreen, a universal screening tool for early identification. Her work bridges neuroscience, education, and public policy.
- Elected member of the National Academy of Medicine

- Speaker at the World Economic Forum and GoogleX
Dr. Shaywitz has been a powerful advocate for dyslexic individuals, testifying before the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, as well as state legislatures, to promote policy changes based on scientific evidence. Her work has been instrumental in translating research into practice, ensuring that scientific knowledge about dyslexia is implemented in schools and healthcare systems. She is the Principal Investigator of the ongoing Connecticut Longitudinal Study and has received numerous grants to support her research on reading development and disorders.
She leads the Yale Center for Dyslexia & Creativity, a multidisciplinary team dedicated to understanding the biological basis of dyslexia, promoting early identification, and highlighting the strengths and creativity of dyslexic individuals.
