Dr. Sally Beckenham is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Human Geography at the University of York's Department of Environment and Geography. She serves as Programme Lead for Human Geography & Environment and Chair of the Department's Teaching Development Pool. Her academic background includes degrees from the University of East Anglia (Modern History), University of Edinburgh (International Politics), and King's College London (International Relations).
Her research focuses on political and development geography in South and Southeast Asia, emphasizing environmental justice, rights, and indigenous environmentalism. She led Leverhulme-funded PhD research on post-tsunami dispossession in Southern India and contributed to the EU-funded CRISEA project (2017-2020), examining ecological knowledge and indigenous discourse in Southeast Myanmar. She is actively involved in critical pedagogy and interdisciplinary collaboration through the Interdisciplinary Global Development Centre (IGDC).
Prior roles include Associate Lecturer at the University of York, Lecturer in International Politics at Chiang Mai University’s Institute of Southeast Asian Affairs, and affiliations with CMU’s Regional Centre for Social Science and Sustainable Development.
