Jean Grugel is a Professor of Development Politics at the Department of Politics and International Relations, University of York. She has held previous roles at the Open University, University of Sheffield, and Universidad Complutense de Madrid, and is an Associate Fellow at UCL's Institute of the Americas. Her research spans sustainable development, human rights, and democratization, with fieldwork in Latin America, Europe, sub-Saharan Africa, and the Philippines.

Her recent research focuses on gendered health inequalities in displacement contexts, the natural resource economy in South America, and health systems in low-income countries post-COVID-19. She leads interdisciplinary projects funded by ESRC, EU, and World Universities Network, among others. As Director of York’s Interdisciplinary Global Development Centre (IGDC), she oversees a 100+ member research hub.
Jean’s scientific accolades include her Associate Fellowship at UCL. She actively engages in public outreach, such as organizing events on peacebuilding and health in Colombia, and contributes to policy through advisory roles with UNICEF and the EU.
