Professor Sally-Ann Cooper is an Honorary Professor at the University of Glasgow's School of Health and Wellbeing, where she leads the Glasgow University Centre of Excellence in Developmental Disabilities and chairs the Scottish Learning Disabilities Observatory. Her work focuses on reducing health inequalities for individuals with intellectual disabilities through epidemiological research and policy-driven interventions. She previously served as Deputy Head of the Institute of Health and Wellbeing until 2019.
Her research spans mental health disparities, healthcare access, and complex intervention trials. Notably, she chaired the NICE guideline committee on mental ill-health in intellectual disabilities (2016) and led the Athena Swan initiative achieving a Gold Award for gender equality in 2018. She currently sits on the UK Research Excellence Framework's Equality and Diversity Advisory Panel and is a Baily Thomas Charitable Fund Trustee.
Key areas of investigation include cancer outcomes, anticholinergic burden in medication use, and dental health disparities. Over 188 publications demonstrate her interdisciplinary expertise, blending clinical, epidemiological, and policy perspectives to address systemic health inequities.
