Salil Soman

Salil Soman, MD, is an Associate Professor and Associate Professor In Residence at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), School of Medicine, within the Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging. He is a board-certified radiologist with clinical expertise in neuroradiology, focusing on brain tumors, stroke, neurodegenerative disorders, and traumatic brain injury.

Dr. Soman earned his MD from Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and completed residency at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, followed by a neuroradiology fellowship and postdoctoral research at Stanford University and the Palo Alto VA. He also holds an MS in Computer Science from MIT. Prior to UCSF, he served as an Assistant Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School and Associate Director of the Neuroradiology Fellowship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

His research centers on advancing brain physiology understanding through MRI-based oxygen extraction fraction (OEF) mapping, a technique enabling non-invasive measurement of cerebral oxygen metabolism. He led the first trial using OEF mapping to differentiate multiple sclerosis lesions from small vessel ischemic disease, with ongoing work expanding into Alzheimer's disease, epilepsy, traumatic brain injury, and vascular dementia to improve diagnostic accuracy and patient outcomes.
