Professor Saliha Belmessous is a British Academy Global Professor and Fellow of Corpus Christi College at the University of Oxford. She holds a position in the Department of History within the Faculty of History. Her research focuses on the global history of empires, particularly the political and legal dimensions of colonization, Indigenous rights, and cross-cultural legal negotiations between European and non-European societies. She leads a British Academy-funded project examining legal encounters from the 16th to 19th centuries, challenging traditional Eurocentric narratives of international law.
Her research interests include global and imperial history, the history of dispossession, and Indigenous petitioning strategies. She is affiliated with the Oxford Centre for Global History, specializing in Modern/Early Modern periods across Africa, Australasia/Pacific, Europe, and North America. She supervises DPhil and Masters students in Global and Imperial History.
Professor Belmessous has received the prestigious British Academy Global Professorship award (2022). Her work bridges historical scholarship with contemporary issues, emphasizing the enduring impact of colonial legal frameworks. She collaborates with interdisciplinary teams and contributes to debates on decolonizing historical methodologies.
