Saleh Seid Adem, M.A., serves as an Associate Lecturer and Researcher at the University of Cologne's Department of Cultural and Social Anthropology. He is concurrently a PhD candidate supervised by Prof. Dr. Michaela Pelican, working on Subproject 3: 'Migration, Intersectionality and Institutional Interaction: African Migrants’ Experiences in the United Arab Emirates'.
His academic roles include:
- Teaching responsibilities as Associate Lecturer
- Primary research duties on Subproject 3 under Prof. Pelican's leadership
- Doctoral studies focused on African migration dynamics
Research expertise centers on:
- Migrant experiences within the UAE's kafala sponsorship system
- Intersectional analysis of race, gender, and nationality in migration contexts
- Strategies of African migrants (Ethiopia/Cameroon) in Gulf labor markets
- Institutional interaction and migrant self-organization
Methodologically, Adem employs mixed approaches combining anthropological and sociological frameworks, with emphasis on auto-ethnography to investigate intersectionality. His regional focus spans East Africa and the Arab Gulf States, particularly examining how globalization shapes migrant trajectories.
As part of the research team alongside Prof. Pelican and Research Assistant Nico Wilkins, Adem contributes to understanding how migrants negotiate institutional constraints while developing adaptive strategies within the UAE's migration governance framework.
